What documents are required to travel to Zanzibar in 2026?
To ensure your holiday gets off to a smooth start, check the entry requirements for Tanzania in advance.
For citizens of Ukraine and Romania, the following key documents are required:
- passport. It must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.
- a tourist visa. Ukrainian citizens require a visa for a tourist trip. It can be applied for in advance online or obtained on arrival, provided the traveller meets the established requirements. A standard single-entry tourist visa costs 50 USD. Romanian citizens do not require a visa for a short-term tourist visit;
- proof of paid accommodation (hotel);
- health insurance. From 1 October 2024, entry to Zanzibar requires compulsory local insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC), which covers the entire duration of the stay up to 92 days;
- Additionally, tourists arriving from countries posing a high health risk, or who have transited through such a country prior to arriving in Zanzibar, must carry a certificate of vaccination against yellow fever*.

From 1 October 2024, all foreign tourists arriving on the island of Zanzibar by air or sea are required to hold special travel insurance issued by Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). This requirement has been introduced by the Tanzanian government to enhance travellers’ safety and minimise potential risks during their stay on the island.
Other insurance policies (from third-party companies) do not exempt you from the requirement to purchase ZIC.

As of October 2026, the official insurer quotes the following rates:
- 44 USD — for an adult;
- 22 USD — for a child aged 3 to 17;
- insurance for children under 2 years of age is free of charge.
Once you have taken out the policy, save the insurance certificate and QR code on your phone or print them out. You may need these documents during checks before departure or upon arrival.
IMPORTANT! From 1 October 2026, compulsory insurance has also been introduced for foreign tourists visiting mainland Tanzania. Previously, a similar rule (requiring a compulsory policy from ZIC) applied only to Zanzibar.

• Your first point of entry determines the policy: you must take out the insurance that corresponds to your first destination upon arrival in the country.
• No double costs: if your itinerary combines the mainland and Zanzibar, there is no need to purchase two separate policies. The main thing is that the policy taken out on entry remains valid for the duration of your trip and covers the entire route.

Direct flights from Bucharest to Zanzibar, Tanzania during the 2026–2027 winter tourist season will operate from Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport, located in Otopeni, 16.5 km north of the city centre, with two popular Romanian airlines: HiSky and Tarom.
Direct charter flights from Bucharest to Zanzibar, operated by HiSky, will be operated using modern new Airbus A320s. This enables HiSky to operate a non-stop flight to Zanzibar from Bucharest.
Flights from Zanzibar to Bucharest, operated by HiSky, are scheduled to include a one-hour technical stop for refuelling at Mombasa Airport, Kenya; passengers will not disembark. The flight time is 09:50, including the refuelling stop.
Operational period for direct flights between Bucharest and Zanzibar: flights H48101 (Monday) / H48101 (Sunday), operated by HiSky from 20 December 2026 to 29 March 2027.
The operating period for the direct flight Bucharest–Zanzibar, operated by Tarom is considerably shorter than that of HiSky.
